Where Did "Sugar Milk" Come From?

… I believed it was within my grasp to outwit a couple of kids. Drawing from
my creative prowess, I devised a solution to Allie and Avery’s devil-may care
attitude on finishing milk ... when the girls set their cereal bowls near the sink
and headed off to their rooms, I proceeded to strain the leftover milk into a
plastic container through the use of a clean dishtowel …

The end-product was virtually undetectable, except for a few tiny specks that
managed to seep through the towel. When I poured it over cereal the next
morning, Allie and Avery were none the wiser. I managed to fool the girls for a
number of weeks with this strategy.

Then, one day, Avery asked me for a glass of milk, and we were out of everything
except my reusable version.

For whatever reason, I convinced myself that I could get away with serving up
a glass, despite Avery’s finicky taste. Handing her a cup, I leaned in to watch her
reaction …

My optimism wavered, however, upon seeing Avery’s scowl. “What in the he ”
she said, but I countered before she could fi nish.

“It’s sugar milk, kiddo!”
